About the Sault Ste. Marie Sports Council
Overview of Sault Ste. Marie Sault Ste. Marie is a city of 75,000 located in the Heart of the Great Lakes, bordering Michigan. Surrounded by scenic wilderness, this waterfront community provides the perfect backdrop for year round sports and recreation activities.
Our Mandate "To encourage all citizens of Sault Ste. Marie to participate in and benefit from sport and recreational activities at the level of their choice in a safe and supportive environment."
Our Purpose "The Sault Ste. Marie Sports Council is a community partnership dedicated to the betterment of sport in Sault Ste. Marie through: Advocating and promoting sports development and sports tourism in Sault Ste. Marie and area. Advocating and supporting the development of stable ongoing funding for sports in Sault Ste. Marie and area. Facilitating effective communication between Sault Ste. Marie and area sports organizations and other key organizations, including all levels of government. Assisting sports organizations and individuals by linking them to, or providing them with, sports-related education and support services. Celebrating local sports achievements and the value of volunteers.
Our Partners Sault Sports Council has partnered with Tourism Sault Ste. Marie (TSSM) and the City of Sault Ste. Marie Recreation and Culture Division to develop a strategic plan that will guide the development and growth of sports and sports tourism in Sault Ste. Marie.
Tourism Sault Ste. Marie is a Division of the City's Economic Development Corporation. While its focus is on attracting tourists to Sault Ste. Marie, its partnership with Sports Council provides a direct link to area sports organizations, allowing more effective promotion of sports tourism in the city. As a result, TSSM and Sault Sports Council work closely together to host major sporting events in Sault Ste. Marie.
Sports Councils - In General Sports Councils serve as a forum for information exchange and coordination among sports clubs and associations. They also create independent collective projects to support their communities. Sports Councils consist of sports and recreation leaders and others interested in the development of sports and recreation, which meet to work and build sport in a community.
